Backpressure is to be avoided...ALWAYS. No exceptions. The reason a smaller exhaust is better in this case is that it keeps the gasses moving faster, and the higher inertia of the faster moving gasses means you are "pulling" more air through the engine. This means that in-between explosions (when the exhaust valves are open, and especially during the intake-exhaust overlap), the inertia of this fast-moving exhaust gas (or the low pressure zone created in its wake, if you prefer) is what pulls fresh air into the cylinder! Of course, forced induction helps as well!
